Does Georgia Require a Notary for Car Title Transfer?

If you are buying or selling a vehicle privately in Georgia, you have probably wondered whether a notary is required to make the title transfer official. The short answer is no — Georgia does not require notarization for standard vehicle title transfers between private parties. However, there are several situations where having a mobile notary present can protect both buyer and seller and make the process smoother.

How Georgia Title Transfers Work

In Georgia, transferring a vehicle title in a casual (private) sale is straightforward. The seller completes the title assignment on the back of the Georgia certificate of title, enters the buyer's full legal name, the sale date, and the odometer reading. Both the seller and buyer sign the assignment. The buyer then takes the signed title to their local County Tag Office to apply for a new title and registration.

Title Assignment

The seller fills out and signs the back of the title. The buyer signs to accept ownership. No notary seal is required by Georgia law for this step.

Bill of Sale (T-7)

Georgia recommends a Bill of Sale for private sales. It documents the transaction price, VIN, and sale date. Notarization is optional but adds a layer of fraud protection.

7-Day Deadline

Title and registration must be completed within 7 days of the purchase date to avoid penalties.

When a Mobile Notary Can Help

Even though Georgia does not mandate notarization for title transfers, many buyers and sellers choose to involve a notary public for peace of mind. Here are the most common scenarios where a mobile notary adds real value:

Notarized Bill of Sale

A notarized Bill of Sale creates a stronger legal record of the transaction. This can help resolve disputes about sale price, condition of the vehicle, or ownership timeline.

Power of Attorney

If the seller cannot visit the Tag Office, a notarized Power of Attorney allows someone else to complete the title application and registration on their behalf.

Lien Release Affidavits

If a lien was paid off but the lienholder did not release it on the title, a notarized affidavit may be required by the County Tag Office before a new title can be issued.

Out-of-State Titles

Vehicles coming from non-title states or countries may need additional notarized documentation, such as a Form T-22B Certification of Inspection affidavit.
